A group from Brazil has managed to unlock Apple’s iPhone 3G handset.
In an online video a Portuguese-language news blog, the unlocked iPhone is displayed and demonstrated. An unlocked iPhone can be used with any SIM card and service provider.
Unlike the software unlock that is used by the usual suspects, this is more of a trick – making your phone believe that it’s using the carrier it is supposed to. How did they do this?
The guys used a SIM card adapter along with a special card that piggybacks your SIM card. This method forges the IMSI (International Mobile Subscriber Identity), making the phone think it’s on the correct network.
