WordPress 3.3 was released

in Article/Blogging/Fun/Wordpress by

For all our WordPress users, please remember to update to WordPress 3.3. Just a few moments ago, WordPress 3.3 was released. The version is named “Sonny” in honor of the great jazz saxophonist Sonny Stitt.

So lets jump in and check out some of the new features that are coming in WordPress 3.3!

Flyout Menus

It used to be that flyout menus would only appear when the menu was collapsed, but this has been changed in the new release. Now you get flyouts even in the full menu which is sure to save you an extra mouse click.

Admin Bar Revamped

The new admin bar is also much more responsive and easier to use. It features dropdown menus that respond onhover, once again saving valuable clicks. The menu has also been rearranged making it a lot easier to find what you are looking for. Several things have been added as well, the most obvious of which is the WordPress icon on the left side of the bar. This icon drops down a menu with many useful links including the Codex and Support Forums.

More Efficient Media Uploader

One of the coolest features that is coming in WordPress 3.3 is the new drag and drop media uploader. The WordPress team has made it incredibly easy to drag files from your desktop and just drop them in the installer. Not only this but they also took all the “add media” buttons and combined them into one to make the interface a lot more simple and clean. The new uploader also has support for HTML5 and Silverlight.

New Feature Tooltips aka Pointers

Whenever there is a new feature added in WordPress 3.3 tooltips will notify users of the addition. This should be a welcome addition especially for those of you whose clients are not very WordPress inclined.

It should be a quick 1-click process in your dashboard, and nobody have an excuse not to do so. And if you are currently using any version before 3.2.1, you better run!

WordPress 2.7 Released

in Blogging/Internet/Wordpress by

The WordPress team has published a version of WordPress, WordPress 2.7.

The first thing that users will notice is the new administration interface which was completely redone to optimize processes.

The development team claims that nearly every task in WordPress 2.7 will take fewer clicks than it took in previous versions of the blogging platform.

Unlike previous versions where it’s a good idea to wait, it is highly recommended to upgrade to WordPress 2.7 now. It is very stable and has been well tested on WordPress.com with more than 5 million blogs over the past week. WordPress 2.7 includes the latest security updates. Once installed, it will notify you for automatic upgrades, making the upgrade process incredibly easy.

WordPress LogoTo upgrade from older versions of WordPress, follow the instructions in the WordPress Codex, the online manual for WordPress Users, in Upgrading WordPress.

Don’t wait. It is critical that you upgrade WordPress now because:

  • Future upgrades will be easier.
  • Your blog will be protected from current security vulnerabilities.
  • It features easy WordPress Theme and Plugin upgrades, additions, and news.
  • Some search engines and directories are considering penalizing page rank or not indexing old versions of WordPress due to security vulnerabilities and failure to upgrade (few spam sites upgrade).

Happy upgrading! 🙂

Adjust Thumbnail Size in WordPress 2.5

in Tutorial/Wordpress by

Here is a simple guide how to change the default size of the thumbnails that WordPress 2.5 creates when you upload an image.

Unlike all previous version, WordPress 2.5 has a very handy new feature. It lets you specify custom thumbnail size for your uploaded images.

To adjust the thumbnail size to your liking, go to Settings > Miscellaneous and change the thumbnail width and height under Image sizes section. Let’s set the width and height to 100×100 for this example.

Also, make sure the Crop to size option is selected, and confirm the changes.

(With Crop to size checked, you don’t have to worry about what size your original image is. It will be adjusted to fit your specified size)

That’s an easy way, right? Gud lak!

WordPress 2.5 Released

in Blogging/Internet/Wordpress by

WordPress 2.5 has been released and includes a huge number of changes over the WordPress 2.3 series. The new version is considered to be a major step forward, lots of elements have changed in the interface for example.

Some of the major features in this release include:

  • faster loading
  • cleaner interface
  • integrated gallery and media management
  • built-in gravatar support
  • plugin one-click updates

While getting new versions of your plugins, you might want to also check a new interface for your administration, Dashboard Widgets.

Dashboard Widgets — the dashboard home page is now a series of widgets, including ones to show you fun stats about your posting, latest comments, people linking to you, new and popular plugins, and of course WordPress news. You can customize any of the dashboard widgets to show, for example, news from your local paper instead of WP news. Plugins can also hook in, for example the WordPress.com stats widget adds a handy double-wide stats box.

One feature that I like is Few-click plugin upgrades.

Few-click plugin upgrades — if the plugins you use are part of the plugin directory since 2.3 we’ve told you when they have an update available. Now we take that to the next logical step — downloading and installing the upgrade for you. This is dependent a little bit on your host setup, and it may ask you for your FTP password much like OS X or Windows will ask you for a password, but it works well on majority of hosts we were able to test, your mileage may very, plugins in mirror may be larger than they appear.

This feature makes me so easy to upgrade all of my installed plugins. I do not have to download, unpack the update, remove the old version of the plugin, and installing the latest version manually. WordPress 2.5 will do all jobs for me automatically. Thanks 😉

Want to upgrade your WordPress right now? Just make sure to check that all your plugins are up-to-date and that none of them conflicts with release 2.5.

Happy upgrading and good luck! 😀

Change Default Thumbnail Size in WordPress 2.3

in Blogging/Tutorial/Wordpress by

Here is a simple guide how to change the default size of the thumbnails that WordPress 2.3 creates when you upload an image.

It is actually quite easy to change – it just requires modification of one WordPress file.

From time to time I wonder just how big the image thumbnails are, and occasionally I even ponder how to go about changing that thumbnail size.

The size for the thumbnail creation in WordPress 2.3 could be changed in the /wp-admin/includes/image.php file.

Just open the file and search for:

$max_side = apply_filters('ws6q9jzl7p_thumbnail_max_side_length',
128, $attachment_id, $file);

and change it to:

$max_side = apply_filters('ws6q9jzl7p_thumbnail_max_side_length',
256, $attachment_id, $file);

That will double the thumbnail size like mine 😉

Well done and have a great day!
