ImageManager Plugin for WordPress

in Article/Blogging/Wordpress by

In my previous post there was quick and dirty solution to solve thumbnail size problem in WordPress. You need to touch and edit the WordPress code. No problem if You like it and learn something from this solution, just like me 😉

There is another solution to solve this problem.The smarter and more powerful solution 😀 You can use ImageManager plugin for WordPress.

The ImageManager plugin integrates the stand alone PHP ImageManager + Editor with WordPress. The ImageManager provides an interface for browsing and uploading image files on/to your server. The Editor allows for some basic image manipulations such as, cropping, rotation, flip, and scaling.

ImageManager Screenshot

ImageManager Feature list:

  • Simple image editor (crop, rotate, flip, and scale).
  • Upload and delete images.
  • Can be localized using the included ImageManager.pot file. Language files: Chinese, English (default), German, Japanese, Norwegian and Spanish.
  • Supports the Role Manager plugin. Capabilities: Upload Files, Make Direcory, Edit Image and Delete Image.
  • Add style using inline style or by setting a class name.
  • Insert the selected image as; the original image, thumbnail with popup (create mini galleries), thumbnail with a link to the original image, thumbnail, or a text link to the original image.
  • Lightbox support. Added rel=”lightbox” to the Thumbnail with link to image and to Link to image. This should make it possible to use the WP lightbox JS or other lightbox plugins together with ImageManager.
  • You can disable the native WordPress Upload Files.

For more detail about this plugin please visit ImageManager website.

How to Resize Thumbnail Image in WordPress

in Blogging/Tutorial/Wordpress by

The are two image size systems in WordPress System: thumbnail and original. Using Thumbnail will insert a thumbnail version of the image into your post. Using Original will insert the image at its original size.

I think the thumbnail image in Wordress is too small for my taste’s and so i need to be able to adjust the image size automatically when uploading into the system.

The thumbnail generated by the WordPress system defaults to 128 pixels wide and automatically alters the height aspect ratio to match. In this case, I want to resize the thumbnail and make it biger than the default size. I think a double size is enough for me 😉

Here are two thumbnail images.

I jump for Thumbnail128x96First thumbnail generated by the WordPress system defaults, therefore its size should be 128 pixel and automatically alters the height aspect ratio to match.

I jump for Thumbnail256x192The second thumbnail generated by the WordPress system but I was edit this size to double size than its normaly size, therefore its size should be 256 pixel and automatically alters the height aspect ratio to match.

Here is a little tips to resize the thumbnail. Feel free to choose your own size. You should to open “wp-admin/inline-uploading.php”, scroll down to line 88 and change:

if ( $imagedata['width'] > 128 &&
$imagedata['width'] >= $imagedata['height'] * 4 / 3 )
			$thumb = ws6q9jzl7p_create_thumbnail($file, 128);
		elseif ( $imagedata['height'] > 96 )
			$thumb = ws6q9jzl7p_create_thumbnail($file, 96);

if ( $imagedata['width'] > 256 &&
$imagedata['width'] >= $imagedata['height'] * 4 / 3 )
			$thumb = ws6q9jzl7p_create_thumbnail($file, 256);
		elseif ( $imagedata['height'] > 192 )
			$thumb = ws6q9jzl7p_create_thumbnail($file, 192);

That will double the thumbnail size like mine 😀

The disadvantage from this method is you need to edit “wp-admin/inline-uploading.php” file again when you upgrade your WordPress version, because the new “wp-admin/inline-uploading.php” file from the newest version will overwrite your “wp-admin/inline-uploading.php” file. Hopefully, in an upcoming WordPress release, they?ll give us a preference on thumbnail sizes.

😀 Well done! have a great day and gud lak!

The “Digg Effect” at

in Blogging/Wordpress by

What is the “Digg Effect”?

The “Digg effect” definition from Wiki is the term given to the phenomenon of a popular website linking to a smaller site, causing the smaller site to slow down or even temporarily close due to the increased traffic.

This Tuesday my Ultimate Ubuntu Dapper Look Like OSX got dugg. This resulted in over 30,304 page loads and 16,000 unique visitors in less than 5 days. Here are some a visual analysis of the “Digg effect”.

My article at

My Article at

It all started when my article was pushed up to the the front page. I’ve submitted some of my other articles to digg at the same day without much success, and this one seemed no different. Perhaps this article got a little attention from diggers 🙂

How to survive from the “Digg Effect” for WordPress

There are some tips to survive from the “Digg Effect” for WordPress:

  1. Coral P2P Web Cache.
    The Coral caching system does not rewrite embedded links to pages or images, so is useful only for sites using relative links to images or other pages. Additionally, Coral will only serve content from the original site up to 24 hours after it becomes unreachable -source Wiki.
  2. DuggMirror.
    Suffering sites may be able to mitigate the “Digg Effect” by temporarily redirecting requests for the targeted pages to one of these mirrors -source Wiki.
  3. WP-Cache 2.0.
    A very-easy-to-install-and-use plugin. By creating cached pages, it reduce the php code parsed by the web server, and also eliminate the query to mysql database. Both speeds up the page load dramatically -source

Diggers seem like a nice bunch they don’t do much damage! 😀 Happy dugg and gud lak!

Explorer Destroyer on WordPress

in Blogging/Tutorial/Wordpress by

Explorer Destroyer is javascript that sits above your regular html on a webpage. When an IE user visits the site, the script will display a block of HTML encouraging them to switch to Firefox.

You already want people to switch to Firefox. Now’s the time to get serious about it. Google is paying $1 for each new Firefox user you refer.

This is pretty amazing. Now you can advance your ideals, save people from popups and spyware hell, and make some serious money. Millions of people have heard about Firefox and are ready to switch–all they need is a friendly push.

That’s where these scripts come in. They’re specially formulated to give just the right push, maximizing souls-saved and dollars-for-you.

I just installed this script on this blog and I want to figure how this script work, giving me more money of course 😉

How to install this script into WordPress?

  1. You need a Google AdSense account to make referral money for each user switched.
  2. Download Explorer Destroyer and unzip the file.
  3. Pick which level you want to install and open the html file for that level in an html or text editor. See for demos of each level.
  4. Grab the file for the front page of your site and open it in an html or text editor. You should save a copy of the original file in case something goes wrong.
  5. Copy the entire contents of the script file and paste it into your HTML. Where you paste it is crucial. The easiest way to do this is to copy the contents of the script file, select the <BODY> tag in your current page and paste the script over it. That will replace your BODY tag with the correct BODY tag for the script and will place all the script contents where they need to be. In WordPress, you should paste your script into header.php file or you should search where the <BODY> tag exist.
  6. Insert your Adsense referral code into your html. In each of the three levels there’s a section of code that displays the ‘Get Firefox’ button. This code is also how Google tracks your referrals. You need to replace this code with the code for a button from your own Adsense account. To find where your Adsense button should go, look for the grey comment text that says:
    and ends with
    <-- -->

    To get your own referral button, login to Adsense and click on the ‘Referrals’ tab. Then click on the ‘Firefox’ tab and copy the code for one of the buttons. We suggest using the medium-size square buttons.

  7. Optional: customize the html. You can make any changes you’d like to the HTML that displays when IE users come to your site. Adding a personal message from you is a great way to convince your readers to switch. I recommend to edit the default message because I not sure the default message is acceptable by Google’s policies. Correct me if I wrong 😉

    Click the button on the right to download Firefox.

    My custom personal message is:

    I see you’re using Internet Explorer. I highly recommend Firefox for best view of my site. Try Firefox, you’ll like it better.

    • Firefox blocks pop-up windows.
    • It stops viruses and spyware.
    • It’s better for web designers and developers.
    • Features like tabbed browsing make reading webpages easier.

    – my firefox referral button here –

    But fell free to make your own message or use the default one 😉

  8. Well done! You should test it. Visit the page in Internet Explorer and make sure everything is working like a dream.

WordPress on Debian Linux

in Blogging/Debian/Linux/Tutorial/Wordpress by

This tutorial is how to install WordPress on Debian Linux. Installing WordPress on Debian? What for? Are there many easy ways to install WordPress on our server (Web hosting)? Eventually, We don’t need to know what distro that our server use or what operating system is. You right.

I have a “special” condition here. I need to install WordPress on my own Debian server for testing purpose. If You like me, play around with WordPress as a developer (perhaps you create your own theme or plugin), you should have your own server in your local PC on LAN.

You can use your own server to test your own WordPress theme or plugin before you release it. You can upload and test your theme or plugin directly on your remote server of course, but if you have a little problem with Internet connection (just like me), it is so hard way 😀

These are my little steps to built my WordPress theme or plugin:

  1. Built on my local PC
  2. Upload to my local server
  3. Testing my work and make sure works propertly
  4. Upload to my remote server
  5. Testing again in the “real” condition
  6. Make sure I have no problem with my work
  7. Sharing my work

Let’s start to install WorPress on Debian

Installing http server on Debian

You can see my tutorial how to install http server on Debian, Installing HTTP Server on Debian.

Installing MySQL Database

You can see my tutorial how to install MySQL Database Server on Debian.

Download WordPress

You can download WordPress from their official website.

Upload your WordPress archieve into your debian server

You can use any ftp tools to upload your WordPress archieve into your server.

Extract your WordPress archieve into your server directory

tar zxvf wordpress-x.x.x.tar.gz --directory=/var/www/

Using MySQL

Create a database for WordPress on your web server, as well as a MySQL user who has all privileges for accessing and modifying it.

mysql -u ''adminusername'' -p
Enter password:
Welcome to the MySQL monitor. Commands end with ; or g.
Your MySQL connection id is 6 to server
version: 4.0.24_Debian-10sarge1-log

Type 'help;' or 'h' for help. Type 'c' to clear the buffer.

mysql> CREATE DATABASE ''wordpress'';
Query OK, 1 row affected (0.00 sec)

mysql> GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON *.* TO 'wordpress'@'localhost'
      -> IDENTIFIED BY 'wordpresspassword' WITH GRANT OPTION;
Query OK, 0 rows affected (0.00 sec)
Query OK, 0 rows affected (0.01 sec)

mysql> EXIT

In the above:

  • adminusername will typically be root, unless you have another high-privileged account set up.
  • wordpress or blog are good values for databasename.
  • wordpress is a good value for wordpressusername.
  • hostname will usually be localhost. If you don’t know what this value should be, check with your system administrator. If you are the system administrator, figure out what this value should be.
  • password should be a difficult-to-guess password, ideally containing a combination of upper- and lower-case letters, numbers, and symbols.

Write down the values you used for databasename, wordpressusername, hostname, and password.

Configure your WordPress setting

Rename the wp-config-sample.php file to wp-config.php. Open and edit wp-config.php file

// ** MySQL settings ** //
define('DB_NAME', 'wordpress');
define('DB_USER', 'wordpress');
define('DB_PASSWORD', 'wordpresspassword');
define('DB_HOST', 'localhost');

Run the Install Script

Using your favorite web browser, visit wp-admin/install.php within the directory into which you just installed WordPress on your web site. For example: point your browser to http://yourserver/wordpress/wp-admin/install.php.

Preview your WordPress

Point your browser to http://yourserver/wordpress.

Well done! You have your own WordPress on Your Debian Server.
