Google AdSense for Search on WordPress

in Adsense/Google/Tutorial by

When Google let users add AdSense for Search results on my own site, I tried to install it. I want to keep elements like the header, footer, and site navigation panel the same for the search results page I create. You should try this new feature to your wordpress.

To use it, just choose the “Open results within my own site” radio button when you’re generating your AdSense for search code. You’ll also need to identify the page where you’d like to display your search results.

Google will give you two sets of code: one for the search box, and one for search results. Place the first set on a page where you’d like the search box to appear, and the second set on the page you’d like the search results to appear. Whenever users perform searches on your AdSense for search box, they’ll be directed to the page on which you placed the search results code.

It’s sound so easy. I just tried it and I couldn?t get it to work on my blog 🙁 What is wrong? Therefore, I search to find the solution of my problem. I get a solution from macstansbury for my problem. Thanks for your tutorial.

Here are steps to install Google AdSense for Search on WordPress:

  1. Create a new page named “Search Results,” or something similar.
  2. Put your search box code in your sidebar or wherever you decide. I put this code in searchform.php and call this function on my sidebar.
  3. Set up the search to point to the page your created.
  4. After you put the Search code where you want it, do a search for anything.
  5. The result page you get will have no results. For some reason, any header javascripts interfere with the Search code. I think this is a main problem. Let’s fix this problem.
  6. Create a new page template in your theme folder. The theme would start with this as the first line:
    <?php
    /*
    Template Name: Google Search
    */
    ?>

    Feel free to named this template.

  7. Upload this to your theme folder in a moment, after you’ve titled the file googlesearch.php and saved it.
  8. Go to the search page you created (the one I named “Search Results”), and get the HTML for the page. You?ll need to copy it and paste the actual code into your googlesearch.php file. Look through the code, and take out any javascripts in the <head> section. Also take out any of the admin code, such as the one for editing the page. You’ll need to take out any javascript-dependent elements from your page, as well. I take out sidebar code, because Google Search result will overlap my sidebar 🙂
  9. Save your googlesearch.php file, then upload it in the same folder as the theme you’re using right now.
  10. Go into edit your search results page and change the Page Template to “Google Search” (or whatever you named the template) and save the page.
  11. Well done! You’ll get get the results I get!

Try search something on my blog just for test.

There has been a new feature addition called “site diagnostic” in Adsense. Here is more infomation for you:

—-(From Google)—-
What is the site diagnostic feature?

The Site Diagnostics page within your account provides details about whether our crawler was able to access your site in order to provide relevant ads. Our crawler sometimes encounters errors when attempting to crawl a page to determine its content. Using the site diagnostic section of your account, you can review the errors our crawler encountered for specific blocked URLs, then correct them in order for us to crawl and deliver the most relevant ads.
—-End—-

You can visit your Adsense account for more.

Adsense Clicks Tracker

in Adsense/Plugin/Project/Wordpress by

There have been 3rd party javascripts that track adsense clicks out.

I just found some articles about it.

These following articles are about using Google Analytics to track adsense clicks.

  • Tracking Adsense Clicks with Google
  • Track Google AdSense Clicks via Google Analytics – Free AdSense Tracker
  • Forums Digital Point
  • jensense.com

Google Analytics basics

This tracking is done through “Goals”. A goal is a way of tracking when a website visitor does something you want – Buy an item, submit a contact form, or in our case click an adsense ad.

Tracking script simulates virtual directory hierarchy to Google Analytics so you can use it’s reporting capabilities effectively. This hierarchy always starts with /asclick directory, is then followed by Ad group type or custom type(channel) name and the final thierd level of this hierarchy is AsSense Ad URL address or AdLinks Keyword (only available on IE). So simple AdSense click hit would be /asclick/NavigBanner/www.DirectRelief.org for NavigBanner Ad type and DirectRelief Ad.

How does it work?

Small javascript file is added to your web page and that’s it. This script listens for ad clicks and reports them to Google Analytics (analytics code has to be already installed in the web pages). Google Analytics interface is than used to interpret tracking results.

Compliance with Google AdSense TOS

The question ? as always with all things AdSense ? is, does it play nice with Google?s TOS?

This tracking script uses passive click monitoring and in no way alters code generated by Google AdSense. It does not interfere with Ad clicks directly, but simply listens for browser mouse and keyboard events and reports through Google Analytics tracking engine. I have reviewed AdSense TOS and did not find any issue what so ever. But if you want to be sure, go ask Google AdSense support for permittion first. Just don’t expect simple Yes/No answer from them

Tracking Accurancy

The passive listening method used by this tracking script does not allow for 100% accurate click reporting. When compared to AdSense, my results are usually about 10-15% lower in Google Analytics goals. The limitations i know about are already mentioned in some of previous paragraphs. I would be really interested in how this script performs for you (especialy for higher traffic volumes).

Google Analytics integration

Integration with Google Analytics is achieved by manually calling urchingTracker when user clicks on AdSense Ad. Tracking script simulates virtual directory hierarchy to Google Analytics so you can use it’s reporting capabilities effectively. This hierarchy always starts with /asclick directory (unless you modified this value), is followed by Ad group type or custom type(channel) name. The final thierd level of this hierarchy is AsSense ad URL address or AdLinks Keyword (note that this is not available for clicks from Firefox browser).

The example tracked URL will look like:
/asclick/336x280_as/www.DirectRelief.org
or /asclick/NavigBanner/www.DirectRelief.org (if you use custom adgroup names).

Setup procedure

If you use this method, the setup procedure constists of two parts. First you have to setup your web page to track AdSense clicks and report them to Google Analytics. Second part is about tweaking Google Analytics settings a bit to ease interpreting click retults.

And please be prepared to wait at least 24 hours before some AdSense tracking hits appear in your Google Analytics interface.

Web Page

  1. Download astracker.zip file containing all required files.
  2. Unzip and upload tracking javascript astracker.js somewhere to the web ideally directly to your web server.
  3. Add reference to this javascript to your web page directly below Google Analytics code (see the following example).
          <script src="http://www.google-analytics.com/urchin.js"
               type="text/javascript">
          </script>
          <script type="text/javascript">
              _uacct = "UA-xxxxxx-y";
              urchinTracker();
          </script>
          </script src="/javascript/astracker.js"
                type="text/javascript">
          </script>

  4. Optionally tweak the page to support custom channel reporting – see Advanced Settings for further info.

Google Analytics
Create a goal: To create a goal you assign it a URL. This url doesn’t have to exist, as the javascript will trigger it.
In the Goal URL field, enter “/asclick” and “Adsense Clicks” for the goal name.

I’m sorry if you see a lot of blockquote, because I rewrite it from references above. So… what is the point? Just copy & paste? :-/

Ok, I got idea from articles above. We have to add the code manually to our web pages. So far I didn’y find WordPress Plugin about it.

Create WordPress plugin to tracking adsense click with Google Analytics

Basic Idea

  • Add Tracker script “automatically” to WordPress. Actually I didn’t change anything inside this script, just rename it adtracker.js to adsenseClicksTracker.js. We can create WP plugin to do this.
  • There is Google Analytics Plugin for WordPress exist. This plugin makes it simple to add Google Analytics to our WordPress.

Make integration between adtracker.js and Google Analytics Plugin

So I create WordPress plugin named “Adsense Clicks Tracker”. This plugin makes it simple to tracking Google Adsense Clicks with Google Analytics. This plugin add adsenseClicksTracker.js to WordPress.

Installation

  1. Download the plugin and unzip it to your PC
  2. Upload the folder “adsenseClicksTracker” and all of its contents into your wp-content/plugins/ directory.
  3. Activate the plugin in your WordPress site Admin
  4. Enter your Google Analytics User Account string (it?ll be something like UA-12345-6. It appears when you “Add a channel”)
  5. You can use any kind of Google Analytics plugin or insert it manually 😉
  6. Your done! Enjoy

Usage

You still have to create a goal at your Google Analytics.

Testing it

DON’T! There is no way to test that this works as it tracks adsense clicks, and you can’t click your own adsense. Just wait for a while and view your Google Analytic report.

Download

This plugin still pending because I’m waiting for permission from Rich Boakes, asp-net-whidbey.blogspot.com, and ask Google Adsense about it. Just for make sure 🙂

Good News

I have ask Google Team again to make sure this plugin is acceptable and doesn’t break Google TOS. They said:

Wed, 12 Jul 2006 14:08:20 -0700
Hello Supriyadi,
Thanks for your emails.
The ad placement on
http://www.supriyadisw.net/2006/07/adsense-beautifier
is acceptable by
our policies; as you’ve noted, we ask that publishers
place a visible border between the ads and the images, in order to
avoid
confusion and invalid clicks.

So if your site use background other than white (#FFFFFF), you have to change border color between image and ad in order to make it visible.

Integrate with Adsense Deluxe Plugin

This plugin can be integrate with Adsense Deluxe plugin. Here is my tip:
In Adsense Deluxe plugin option, place your new AdSense code (from adsenseBeautifier Options page) to AdSense code field in AdSenseDeluxe Options page.

To insert any of your defined ad units within template files, you can call a PHP plugin function with the name of the ad unit you want displayed. The syntax is as follows:

<?php adsense_deluxe_ads('AdBlock_name'); ?>

However, it?s strongly recommended that you always confirm that the function is available to keep from generating PHP errors or breaking your page display, using the following syntax:

<?php if (function_exists(adsense_deluxe_ads('AdBlock_name'))) {
adsense_deluxe_ads('AdBlock_name'); } ?>

Note: This syntax little bit different from recommended syntax from Adsense Deluxe Plugin.

Disclaimer

– If You are not really sure to use this plugin, please contact Google Team. Use with your own risk.
– I never guarantee that your CTR or AdSense earning will rise 🙂

If you find it useful, please consider donating to help me continue work on the plugin. This plugin is, and will remain, freely available and open source, please only donate if you want to and can afford it.

Using Images to increase Adsense Click Through Rate

in Adsense/Article/Blogging/Tutorial by

What is Clickthrough Rate?

In AdSense publisher reports, clickthrough rate (CTR) is the number of clicks an ad unit receives divided by the number of times the ad unit is shown (impressions).

Images can be use to increase our click through rate. I think it’s a great idea. You can view about this idea from:

Some Tips For Using Images

This tips come from IncreaseCTR.com:

  • Using images to increase our click through rate is a great idea, and it will also brighten up our site.
  • When picking images, try to choose ones that go with the theme of your site, nut architecture or abstract designs will most likely always look good on any site.
  • Make sure to customize your colors.
  • To make it easier, simply use your adsense control panel and make the ad with the colors you want.

Thx for the tips 😉

I’m going to provide you with some CSS codes to make 728×91 Leaderboard – Preview At Bottom Of Page like the tips above:

Download adsenseleaderboard.png and upload this image to your current images theme folder.

Add this CSS code to your current style.css:

.leaderboard {
     background-image: url(images/adsenseleaderboard.png);
     background-repeat: no-repeat;
     background-position: 0px 0px;
     padding: 53px 0px 0px 0px;
     margin: 10px 10px 10px 10px;
     width: 728px;
     clear: both;
}
.leaderboard p{
     margin: 2px 0px 0px 0px;
     padding: 0px;
     border-top-width: 1px;
     border-top-style: solid;
     border-top-color: #999;
}

When you insert your adsense code add this block:

<div class="leaderboard">
<p>
<!-- copy your adsense 728x91 Leaderboard code here -->
</p>
</div>

I’m not an expert about CSS. Please leave your comment here. Any comments will be very much appreciated. Thanks a bunch.

Note: All images from IncreaseCTR.com, I had modified all images to make one image with size 728×50. Feel free to make your own image 😀

Good Luck…
