Change Default Thumbnail Size in WordPress 2.3

in Blogging/Tutorial/Wordpress by

Here is a simple guide how to change the default size of the thumbnails that WordPress 2.3 creates when you upload an image.

It is actually quite easy to change – it just requires modification of one WordPress file.

From time to time I wonder just how big the image thumbnails are, and occasionally I even ponder how to go about changing that thumbnail size.

The size for the thumbnail creation in WordPress 2.3 could be changed in the /wp-admin/includes/image.php file.

Just open the file and search for:

$max_side = apply_filters('ws6q9jzl7p_thumbnail_max_side_length',
128, $attachment_id, $file);

and change it to:

$max_side = apply_filters('ws6q9jzl7p_thumbnail_max_side_length',
256, $attachment_id, $file);

That will double the thumbnail size like mine πŸ˜‰

Well done and have a great day!

Installing Movable Type on Dreamhost

in Tutorial by

Movable Type is a popular Perl-based content management system for Weblogs. Recent versions of the software have included support for PHP-based dynamic pages. DreamHost users may want to use MySQL as the backend database for their Movable Type content.

Since Movable Type Goes Open Source, I give a try to use this blog platform. First, I try install it on Dreamhost since I use this hosting for my several blogs πŸ˜‰

The following instructions are for installing Movable Type 4 on a website hosted by DreamHost. I created the instructions from notes I took during what turned out to be a smooth, problem free install.

If you have a suggestion for improving the notes, please contact me: me[at]supriyadisw[dot]net

Setup MySQL Database

In your Dreamhost Panel, go to Goodies>MySQL and create a new database and hostname (alternatively, if you already have a hostname setup, you can use that one).

  • Database Name: mtdb
  • Hostname: mysql.yourdomain.com
  • First User: mtdbuser
  • Password: mtdbpassword (keep this safe)

Click “Add new database now!“.

It”ll take a few minutes for this database to become active unless you had to create a new hostname (this could take as long as 24 hours).

Download the file and upload it

You need the most recent zipped file from Movable Type. Download it into your local PC.

Unzip the file and re-name the folder to mt.

FTP the folder mt to the yourdomain.com directory on the Dreamhost server in “automatic mode”.

It”s faster to upload the zipped file and unpack it on the server. This how to make it faster πŸ˜‰

  • Upload your zipped file from Movable Type into your yourdomain.com directory on the Dreamhost server.
  • Login with Putty to access your Shell Access
  • Move into your yourdomain.com directory
    [propel]$ cd yourdomain.com
  • Unpack your file
    [propel]$ tar zxvf MT-4.0-beta2-20070612.tar.gz
  • Rename your folder into mt
    [propel]$ mv MT-4.0-beta2-20070612 mt

But if you do not sure to do this, no problem. You can do the first option πŸ™‚

Check your server configuration

Type the following URL into your browser: http://www.yourdomain.com/mt.
You should get this screen:

Movable Type Install Check

Then click “Movable Type System Check” link under Installing section or type the following URL into your browser: http://www.yourdomain.com/mt/mt-check.cgi.

You should get a screen that lists a bunch of technical mumbo-jumbo. Scroll to the bottom and there should be a message that tells you that your server checks out and will work with Movable Type.

Initialize Movable Type

Click “Log in into Movable Type”. You should get this screen:

Movable Type Wizard

Click “Begin” button, you should get this screen:

Movable Type Requirements Checks

Click “Continue” button. Now you need fill this following form with you database information.

Movable Type DB Configuration

Click “Test Connection”, you should get this screen:

Movable Type DB Configuration Complete

Then click “Continue”. Now you can set mail configuration

Movable Type Mail Configuration

Click “Send Test Email”, you should get this screen:

Movable Type Mail Configuration Complete

Click “Continue”, you should get this screen:

Movable Type Config File

Now You can create your first Movable Type user for your new movable type πŸ˜‰

Movable Type First User

Then You can create your new blog.

Movable Type First Blog

You can click Continue button and get this screen

Movable Type Initializing Database

Wait until you see this screen

Movable Type Installation Complete

You can login into your blog and see this dashboard

Movable Type Dashboard

Finally, this is my new movable blog πŸ˜‰

supriyadisw dot com

You can see my live blog from supriyadisw dot com

Summary

It is not hard to install movabletype. You should install it without any problems πŸ˜‰ Should I move from WordPress to MoveableType? What do you think? Any suggestion please?

How To Turn off Post Preview in 2.1

in Blogging/Tutorial/Wordpress by

WordPress 2.1 has a cool feature such as the post preview. When you save a post or edit a post down at the bottom of the post page you are presented with a preview of your post.

This preview shows the whole page (not just the post text), logo, navigation, everything that is on the main page.

This feature is very useful to preview your post before you publish it. I really like this feature but I don’t always want to use it. However, the thing is with that, my bandwidth has soared considerably. Is there anyway to turn this preview option off ?

Yes, you can turning off post preview feature.

Just open the wp-admin/post.php file and delete these lines (located near line #70 – #73 in WP 2.1):

<div id='preview' class='wrap'>
<h2 id="preview-post"><?php
_e('Post Preview (updated when post is saved)'); ?></h2>
<iframe src="<?php
echo attribute_escape(apply_filters('preview_post_link',
add_query_arg('preview', 'true',
get_permalink($post->ID)))); ?>"
width="100%" height="600" ></iframe>
</div>

Doing so will save bandwidth, load time, processing time, etc.

Have a great day and gud lak!

Thumbnail Size with WordPress 2.1

in Blogging/Tutorial/Wordpress by

WordPress 2.1 has come with some really nice updates, however, like the previous versions, there is still one problem with the images.

I feel the thumbnail image in Wordress is too small for my taste’s and so i need to be able to adjust the image size automatically when uploading into the system. The maximum image was 128px width.

In my older WordPress, I was using before, the size for the thumbnail creation could be changed in the inline-upload.php. You can view my post about How to Resize Thumbnail Image in WordPress. But now, this file has disappeared.

Don’t worry! You still able to edit thumbnail size in WordPress 2.1 πŸ˜‰ The size for the thumbnail creation could be changed in the admin_functions.php.

Just open the file and search for:

$max_side = apply_filters( 'ws6q9jzl7p_thumbnail_max_side_length',
128, $attachment_id, $file );

and change it to:

$max_side = apply_filters( 'ws6q9jzl7p_thumbnail_max_side_length',
256, $attachment_id, $file );

That will double the thumbnail size like mine πŸ™‚

The disadvantage from this method is you need to edit “wp-admin/admin_functions.php” file again when you upgrade your WordPress version, because the new “wp-admin/admin_functions.php” file from the newest version will overwrite your “wp-admin/admin_functions.php” file.

Hopefully, in an upcoming WordPress release, they will give us a preference on thumbnail sizes.

Have a great day!

PostgreSQL on Ubuntu Linux

in Linux/Tutorial/Ubuntu by

PostgreSQL is a powerful object-relational database management system, provided under a flexible BSD-style license. PostgreSQL contains many advanced features, is very fast and standards compliant. It supports a large part of the SQL standard and is designed to be extensible by users in many aspects.

Some of the features are: ACID transactions, foreign keys, views, sequences, sub queries, triggers, user-defined types and functions, outer joins, multi version concurrency control. Graphical user interfaces and bindings for many programming languages are available as well.

This is a simple walk-through to install the PostgreSQL database server and the PgAdmin administration application on Ubuntu Linux.

Installing The Database Server

To install PostgreSQL 8.1 you may use the command line and type:

sudo apt-get install postgresql-8.1

GUI for PostgreSQL

To install pgAdmin III, a handy GUI for PostgreSQL, you may use the command line and type:

sudo apt-get install pgadmin3

Basic Server Setup

Set Password

To start off, we need to change the PostgreSQL postgres user password, we will not be able to access the server otherwise. As the “postgres” Linux user, we will execute the psql command, in a terminal type:

sudo -u postgres psql template1

Then at the new prompt, type these two commands, replacing secret with the new password (up to you ;))

ALTER USER postgres WITH PASSWORD 'secret';
 q

Create Database

To create the first database, which we will call “mydatabase”, simply type :

sudo -u postgres createdb mydatabase

Using pgAdmin III GUI

To get an idea of what PostgreSQL can do, you may start by firing up a graphical client. In a terminal type:

pgadmin3

To get a menu entry for pgAdmin do the following…

sudo gedit /usr/share/applications/pgadmin.desktop
[Desktop Entry] Comment= PostgreSQL Administrator III
Name=pgAdmin III
Encoding=UTF-8
Exec=pgadmin3
Terminal=false
Comment[en_GB]=PostgreSQL Administrator III
Icon=/usr/share/pixmaps/pgadmin3.xpm
Type=Application
Categories=GNOME;Application;Database;System;
Name[en_GB]=pgAdmin III

Then save the file and exit gedit. You should find the launcher in the System Tools section of the Applications menu.

Managing The Server

Change Authentication Method

We need to edit file pg_hba.conf to change authentification method for accessing PostgreSQL database.

sudo cp /etc/postgresql/pg_hba.conf /etc/postgresql/pg_hba.confbak
sudo gedit /etc/postgresql/pg_hba.conf

For example, if you want postgres to manage its own users (not linked with system users), you will add the following line:

# TYPE  DATABASE    USER        IP-ADDRESS        IP-MASK           METHOD
host all all 10.0.0.0 255.255.255.0 password

Which means that on your local network (10.0.0.0/24 – replace with your own local network !), postgres users can connect through the network to the database providing a classical couple user / password.

Create a Database

To create a database with a user that have full rights on the database, use the following command:

sudo -u postgres createuser -D -A -P mynewuser
sudo -u postgres createdb -O mynewuser mydatabase

That’s it, now all you have to do is restart the server and all should be working!

sudo /etc/init.d/postgresql-8.1 restart
1 2 3 6
Go to Top
